Mumbai, 16-17 March 2006 - Introduction & Objectives

India Private Equity

Introduction
India PE DataTen years into its reform, India has emerged as one of the most favoured investment destinations in global private equity. In 2004, the worlds second most populous nation attracted US$1.3 billion of private equity, virtually the same amount boasted by China. In the first half of 2005, private equity investors directed US$534 million to the country via 42 transactions, a 21% increase from that of 2004 for the same period.

Once a cocoon economy, global institutions are today knocking on the door that
leads to Taj Mahal. It is no longer uncommon to enlist institutional names such as -

  •  CalPERS
  • Partners Group
  • Goldman Sachs
  • New York Life Capital

as investors in Indian private equity funds. By the end of the third quarter of 2005, Indias private equity fund pool will, for the first time, welcome two funds that will exceed US$300 million. The development is a milestone for the country, further underscoring global investors soaring interest to India.

In the 18 months ending June 2005, the investment profile in India is a portrait of the rising level of foreign undertaking. Of the 42 transactions recorded by Asia Private Equity Review, 12% were participated by those foreign firms that have no operational presence in India.

The impetus driving foreign investors intense interest lies in the divestment
results. In the 18 months ending June 2005, there were 53 exits known to have taken place in India, which returned an estimated US$1.9 billion to investors.
